Three of hockey’s recent conference champions were well represented when the NHL named it’s Three Stars of the Week, including the New York Rangers, as Kevin Hayes netted Third Star honors.
Capping off the week of October 31-November 6, Hayes scored a goal in each game of the Rangers‘ four games this week, all victories. Hayes allowed himself to move up into the Rangers‘ scoring leaders, currently tied for second on the team in goals with Jimmy Vesey, Mats Zuccarello and Rick Nash, who all trail Michael Grabner by one. Hayes is also alone in second place in points, tallying 12 thus far. He also trails by one in that stat, this time to JT Miller.
Hayes also had a couple of assists during the week, both obtained during Thursday’s win over Edmonton. He also put up an impressive plus/minus of 7, as well as a shorthanded goal on Saturday night in Boston, which served as the game winner.
Currently in his third year in the league, Hayes faced scrutiny last season after his numbers went down from his impressive rookie year. However, through 13 games, Hayes has already a third of the way to last year’s total of 36 points, which took him 79 games to achieve.
Hayes headlines the weekly awards along side Corey Crawford of Chicago (3-0-0, 1.00 GAA, 1 SO this week) and Nikita Kucherov of Tampa Bay (3 G’s, 4 A’s, 7 P’s), who placed second and first, respectively.
Hayes is the first Ranger to earn Star of the Week honors since February of last year, when Henrik Lundqvist did so for the week of February 8-14.
