For the first time this season, the Rangers will play games on back-to-back nights, as they complete their first such rodeo with a Sunday evening tilt against the Arizona Coyotes (7:00, MSG/NHL Network).
The Rangers enter 3-2-0, good for sole possession of third place in the very early Metropolitan Division standings. They won the first set of their back-to-back with a win over the Washington Capitals on Saturday, capturing the game by a 4-2 final. Jimmy Vesey tallied his first career multi-goal game, scoring twice in the span of three minutes to help erase a 2-0 first period deficit. Brandon Pirri and Rick Nash also had goals for the Rangers, while Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves. Nash also had assist on one of the Vesey goals for his first multi-point game since January 19 against Vancouver last season.
Meanwhile, Arizona (1-3-0) has lost three in a row after taking their season premiere against Philadelphia. They’re currently in the Tri-State area portion of an early six-game Eastern road trip, having started it with a 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Friday night in Brooklyn. Arizona scored both of their goals in the first period over a span of 13 seconds, with Brad Richardson putting one in first before Radim Vrbata did likewise to knot the game up in a temporary 2-2 deadlock. They’ll end their visit to the New York area with a trip to New Jersey on Tuesday night.
This will be the first of two meetings between the Rangers and Coyotes this season, the Rangers having taken both meetings last year, both by 4-1 final scores. In the meeting at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers made up a 1-0 deficit via goals by Mats Zuccarello, Kevin Hayes and Nash, while Lundqvist made 34 saves. The two teams will meet again on December 29 in Arizona.
