ANAHEIM, Calif. — Mason McTavish played the hero for the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night, scoring just 59 seconds into overtime to cap off a thrilling 5-4 comeback victory against the New York Rangers.
Trailing by two goals with under six minutes left in regulation, Anaheim stormed back with late tallies from Cutter Gauthier and Olen Zellweger, who tied the game with just 1:45 remaining. McTavish then sealed the win in overtime, netting his 20th goal of the season off a feed from Jackson LaCombe.
Standout Performances
Rookie Leo Carlsson had a breakout night, recording his first career four-point game with a goal and three assists. Gauthier and Alex Killorn also found the back of the net, while Lukas Dostal stopped 27 shots to help Anaheim snap a three-game skid.
For the Rangers, J.T. Miller, Alexis Lafrenière, and Adam Fox each had a goal and an assist, while Mika Zibanejad added a power-play goal. Igor Shesterkin made 28 saves but couldn’t prevent New York from suffering its fifth loss in six games.
Key Moment
Gauthier ignited the Ducks’ rally with a backhand rebound goal with 5:48 left in regulation. Minutes later, Zellweger finished an odd-man rush with a perfectly placed shot under the crossbar to force overtime.
By the Numbers
Anaheim, which had just one short-handed goal in its first 70 games, has now scored two in as many contests after Killorn’s first-period tally followed Carlsson’s shorty from Wednesday’s game.
