New York, NY – Alexis Lafrenière dazzled with his first career hat trick, and Jonathan Quick stopped all 21 shots he faced as the New York Rangers cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Calgary Flames at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
The win improves the Rangers’ record to 25-30-8, providing a spark in a season marked by inconsistency, while the Flames drop to 25-31-7. The scoring opened late in the first period on the power play. With Calgary’s Mikael Backlund serving a tripping penalty against Vincent Trocheck, Lafrenière tipped in a pass from Mika Zibanejad at 17:27, with Adam Fox earning the secondary assist.
The goal, Lafrenière’s 16th of the season, gave New York a 1-0 lead after a period where both teams registered nine shots apiece.The Rangers pulled away in the second period with two more goals. Conor Sheary doubled the advantage at 10:28, wristing one past Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf after setups from Tye Kartye and Will Borgen.
Lafrenière struck again at 16:31, this time with a wrist shot assisted by Gabriel Perreault and Zibanejad, pushing the lead to 3-0.
New York outshot Calgary 12-9 in the frame, controlling the tempo despite a holding penalty on Perreault midway through. Lafrenière completed his hat trick in the third period at 17:42 with a slap shot, assisted by Perreault and Urho Vaakanainen, sealing the 4-0 final.
The Rangers dominated the final stanza, limiting the Flames to just three shots while adding eight of their own. Quick’s performance was flawless, earning his first shutout of the season and the second star of the game behind Lafrenière. Penalties played a factor early, with Calgary accumulating six minutes in the box compared to New York’s four.
The Flames went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Rangers converted 1-of-3 opportunities.
Hits were physical, with Calgary edging New York 25-23, but the Rangers blocked 16 shots to the Flames’ 10.
Faceoffs were even at 50% for both sides (26-of-52).
Lafrenière’s breakout night highlighted his emergence as a top-line threat, now with 18 goals on the season. Perreault chipped in two assists, earning third star honors.
For Calgary, the shutout loss extends their road struggles, as they failed to generate consistent offense against a stingy Rangers defense.This victory follows a 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers the previous night, suggesting the Rangers may be finding their stride.
