Over the weekend, there was some talk about the Texas Rangers (The MLB team) thinking about a name change. While the history of the name of each team is much different, obviously, the actual nicknames are the same. So, if one changed it might seem like the other would have to follow. Without diving too deep into the politics of it all, let’s brainstorm some possible ideas if the New York Rangers do end up changing their nickname.

REDS: While boring, this nickname isn’t horrible. It is a spin-off of the city’s nickname, “The Big Apple.” Yes, apples can also be green, but in New York, “The Big Apple” is commonly represented by a red apple. This name is also in reference to the red-tailed hawk. A bird that can be seen all throughout the city. New Yorkers love seeing these Hawks and have been known to make these birds celebrities.  People have written blogs, filmed them, and even put them on TV. Just because they happen to be flying around the city. I think naming a team after these two things would be a great idea.

CABBIES: A cabbie is a common nickname used to refer to a taxi cab driver. The New York taxis are world famous, and they play a huge role in the day to day life of millions of people’s lives every single day. So naming a team after the people who do this underappreciated job seems fair enough.

TRAINS: Somewhat similar to “Cabbies”, the Trains would represent another major form of transportation that is especially famous in New York. The Subway is a way of life for all New Yorkers. And with the Rangers playing directly above one of the major hubs for trains in the world, naming a team after it would make a ton of sense.

FIVE?? In my eyes, a name related to the number five would be the best option. Unfortunately, I could not think of any that would serve as even a decent team name. But, I think a name related to this number would be awesome. It would be in reference to the five boroughs that make up the city, and naming a team after it would tie into the unity between them.

I want to make it clear that I am not advocating for a name change, and I do not think that the Rangers name will be changing anytime soon. I just thought it might be fun to think of some possible other names for the franchise we all love.
