Rangers defeat Montreal 4-1 on Thursday evening. Blueshirts extended their winning streak to three games and backup goalie Jarosalv Halak.
Chris Kreider scored the game’s first goal on a short-handed breakaway between the pads of Jake Allen. According to Mollie Walker of the New York Post, Montreal was the only team in the NHL that hadn’t given up a shorthanded goal this season.
Braden Schenider made it 2-0 with a wrist shot from the point at 12:28 of the second period. Filip Chytil scored twice; first in the second period on a spinning one-timer then an empty netter in the third.
Quote of the night: “Sometimes it’s hard to go from the top team to the other side, but [Montreal] played great today,” Chytil said. “They played hard, and the two points were earned.”
Halak made 17 of 18 saves and his third straight victory. The Canadians didn’t record a shot until three minutes left in the first period.
Blueshirts are tied with Washington for third place in the Metropolitan division with 50 points. Only 1 point behind the Devils and both teams will meet up for a Saturday matinee at the Rock.
