The bright lights of Madison Square Garden are set to shine bright on Sunday evening as the New York Rangers return home to kick off a crucial stretch of the schedule. The Blueshirts will play four of their next five games in the friendly confines of The Garden, and it all starts tonight with a 6:00 PM ET puck drop against the Utah Mammoth.
It’s the first meeting of the season between these two squads, and there’s plenty of intrigue in the air. The Rangers enter this matchup with a 2-1-0 record to start the year.
There are also some fascinating connections on the ice tonight. Blueshirts defenseman Sean Durzi spent two seasons skating for Utah, while former Rangers alternate captain Vincent Trocheck now suits up for the Mammoth, alongside New York native Nick DeSimone. But once the puck drops, the sentimentality goes right out the window. The Blueshirts are looking to protect home ice and string together three straight wins.
Projected Goaltending Matchup: Shesty’s Crease
When you talk about elite goaltending, the conversation always leads back to Igor Shesterkin. And Shesty enters this matchup riding a wave of historic momentum.
On October 1, Shesterkin did the unthinkable, scoring the first-ever goal by a goaltender in franchise history—joining an exclusive club as just the 18th netminder in NHL history to light the lamp. On that same night, he locked down his 100th career win at Madison Square Garden in just his 177th game, making him the fourth-fastest Rangers goalie to reach that milestone behind only Mike Richter, Eddie Giacomin, and Henrik Lundqvist.
Shesterkin’s 188 career wins since the 2019-20 season rank fifth among all NHL goaltenders, and his ability to completely shut the door is well documented. He’s already tallied 94 career games allowing one or fewer goals, placing him sixth all-time in franchise history. Expect Shesterkin to be dialed in and ready to turn away a physical, gritty Utah attack tonight under the MSG spotlight.
Keys to Victory for the Blueshirts
1. Special Teams Superiority
If there’s an area where the Rangers can truly tilt the ice in their favor, it’s with the man advantage. Since the 2025-26 season, the Rangers’ power play is humming along at a 24.8 percent clip, which is tied for fifth in the NHL. Mika Zibanejad—who recently surpassed Chris Kreider for the second-most game-opening goals in franchise history (60)—is a powerhouse on the power play. Having recently scored his 137th career power-play goal, Zibanejad and elite playmaker Adam Fox (who recently tied Ron Greschner for the second-most multi-assist games by a defenseman in franchise history) need to keep the puck moving and exploit Utah’s penalty kill.
2. Win the Dot and Play Heavy
One of the calling cards of this young, energetic Rangers roster (averaging a youthful 26.63 to start the year) is how hard they compete in the dirty areas. The Blueshirts currently rank third in the NHL with 85 hits and 48 blocked shots. Furthermore, their dominance at the faceoff dot is staggering; their 54.4 faceoff win percentage since 2025-26 ranks second in the league. With captain J.T. Miller anchoring the dot (coming off a season where he ranked third in the NHL with a blistering 61.5 faceoff win percentage), New York needs to control possession early and often to wear down the Mammoth.
3. Jump on Them Early
The Rangers have excelled at setting the tone early in games this season. With points in three of their four all-time games against Utah (1-1-2), the Blueshirts need to use the energy of the MSG crowd to dictate the pace from the opening shift. Getting pucks deep, testing the Utah defense with a heavy forecheck, and grabbing the game’s first goal will force the Mammoth to chase all night.
Final Score Prediction
The Garden faithful will be roaring, Shesterkin will be sharp as ever, and the Rangers’ special teams will prove to be the difference maker in a hard-fought, physical battle.
Prediction: Rangers 4, Utah 2
