Rangers Lose Four Straight as Blueshirts Fall 4-1 to Oilers at The Garden
It was a tough night under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden for The Blueshirts. Sunday night’s matchup against the Edmonton Oilers brought plenty of history, but unfortunately, most of it was written by the visitors. The Rangers dropped their fourth consecutive game, falling to 7-7-1 on the season after a 4-1 defeat to an Oilers squad that kept their momentum rolling.
The tone was set right out of the gate. Just 50 seconds into the opening frame, Connor McDavid broke the game open, taking a feed from Evan Bouchard, banking it to himself in the neutral zone, and blowing past the Rangers defense to put Edmonton up 1-0. That tally set an Oilers franchise record with the eighth opening-minute goal of McDavid’s career, passing none other than Mark Messier.
Edmonton extended their lead to 2-0 at the 6:19 mark when Colton Dach capitalized from the left face-off circle. Though the Rangers caught a break when a would-be Bouchard goal was wiped off the board due to goaltender interference later in the first, the Oilers kept the pressure on.
Bouchard struck again on the power play at 9:49 of the second period, blasting a point shot past Dylan Garand to make it 3-0. McDavid collected the secondary assist on the play, extending his remarkable season-opening assist streak to 15 games and making him the fastest player in NHL history to reach 30 assists, eclipsing Wayne Gretzky’s mark from 1984-85.
The Garden finally got to erupt in the second period when Pavel Dorofeyev put the Rangers on the board at 13:22. Scott Morrow, making his season debut, fired a shot that generated a rebound, and Dorofeyev tracked it down, slipped it past the defense, and tucked it home on his forehand to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Blueshirts showed plenty of fight in the third, highlighted by a massive penalty kill that successfully erased a 5-on-3 Oilers power play for 1:28 to keep the deficit at two. However, the comeback bid fell short, and Dach sealed the 4-1 final with an empty-netter with just 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
Garand finished the night with 21 saves in the losing effort, while Matt Tomkins stopped 27 shots for Edmonton.
Three Stars of the Game
1. Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers) – A historic night for the Oilers captain, who picked up two points, extended his season-opening assist streak to 15 games, broke Gretzky’s record to become the fastest to 30 assists, and set a franchise record for opening-minute goals.
2. Evan Bouchard (Edmonton Oilers) – A dominant night on the blue line for Bouchard, who racked up a goal and two assists while orchestrating the Edmonton attack.
3. Colton Dach (Edmonton Oilers) – Provided the finisher’s touch for the Oilers with a pair of goals, including the game-sealing empty-netter in the third period.
Look Ahead
The Blueshirts will need to regroup quickly as they look to snap this four-game skid. The team must use the days ahead to reset, clean up the defensive zone, and find their offensive rhythm before the next puck drop.
